Prayer Needed Immediately.

Posted by kretzu | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 26-01-2010

I am so incredibly heartbroken that people are using the devastation and turmoil that is taking place in Haiti right now for their own profit.

It’s taking everything in me to word this appropriately, but I am so furious with the sick, sick people that are going to hospitals and buying children to sell into sex trafficking and human slavery.

The most recent example I read about this was just a bit ago via the Twitter account of Shaun King.  (You’ll have to search back a page or two to see this episode unfold in full.)

There are confirmed reports of employees of  Hopital Espoir in Haiti are selling children to the black market.

Hopital Espoir means Hospital of Hope.  I can’t imagine how terrified these children must be.

Please take a minute now, whatever you are doing, and pray for those children, the leaders and authorities that can help prevent this, and the people involved with this heartbreaking business.

I find it very difficult to believe any child trafficking could be going on at Hope Hospital in Haiti, it is one of the most reputable organizations in the city and has been treating hundreds of patients since the earthquake. UNICEF did a study of all the child welfare organizations operating in Haiti and only recommended two, one was Mother Teresa’s and the other was the one you are saying is involved in human traffiking. I participate in a local organization that is involved in stopping human traffiking, I’m aware of the atrocities of such a thing. If it is going on at the hospital it is without the knowledge of the leadership. All of the children in their care before the earthquake are still there

I know it’s a concern, I find it abhorent, and I would like to know what a nurse there has seen. There are guest doctors from Germany there operating on patients. There is a night shift doctor so there is 24 hour supervision of staff. I know the Haitian court wants to see information on every child leaving the country and that is one place that can put a double check on documents. My understanding is that the only children leaving the country were in the adoption process prior to the earthquake with families who have had background checks, home studies and their fingerprints run through the FBI. No children that may be orphaned because of the earthquake could be processed for adoption for many, many months until family reunification can be explored. What may happen within Haiti is a different matter. But I can vouch for the leadership of Hope Hospital and find it impossible to believe this could happen there. Unicef would find it hard to believe as well, they have great respect for this organization so there is no concern about an investigation. My concern is your posting casts doubts in people’s minds and that is a hard thing to undo even if it is unfounded.

I appreciate your comment and your faith in this hospital. I hope it’s true! I am not, nor have I ever been, in Haiti so I definitely don’t have any personal experience to base that information on, other than what I have heard.

It isn’t my intention to throw mud on the face of any hospital or organization that is doing good. My only intent with this post is for people to pray for the situation as I understood it.

I apologize if my comments cause any negative affect on that hospital or any organizations working there in this ridiculously tragic time.

Any organization that has humans involved is prone to make mistakes on any level. Whether government, NGO, or church – people make mistakes.

I had based my information off of a pastor that is there currently (I linked in my original post).

Since then, there have been other confirmations of trafficking happening. I don’t know if it specifically at that hospital or not, but regardless of where it is happening – it is happening. And if we can’t physically help, we can pray.

I know CNN did a story on it and I also read about it here: http://twitter.com/AmanpourCNN

Chris,
Thank you for your reply. We welcome any investigation into the integrity of the hospital.

I have been to this Hospital, and I have worked with its director for more than 20 years. Again, if it is happening there, which I too hope it is not, it is definitely without knowledge of the leadership as it is top knotch and without knowledge of the American and German doctors there now.

Chris,
Carel Pedre confirmed this is a rumor. He was one of the first (if not the first) ones to mention the hospital.

@carelpedre twitter:

“I investigated the child trafficking case @ hopital espoir. It was a rumor. However It’s still a pending thread in others areas #haiti”

http://twitter.com/carelpedre

Hopefully word gets out that this has been confirmed as NOT TRUE.

Chris, I appreciate this post. The sad, sad fact is that children have been Trafficked in Haiti for a long time, well before the earthquake. Now, it’s only going to get worse. I actually just blogged about this at stopslaveryhere.com and included an investigation into the Haitian slave trade from last year. It’s worth the watch. I know that World Vision is doing good there on behalf of the widow and the orphan. I am joining you in prayer over this situation.
